GeRMINDER for the Week of April 23-28

If you have questions about any of the announcements please contact Shelly Germinder at sgerminder@hackettcp.org

Work-a-thon- This Friday, April 27th, the students and staff along with a number of parent volunteers will spend the morning volunteering at various locations throughout the local community and the Diocese of Kalamazoo. The following are locations that have been confirmed for service this week:

Parishes: St. Ambrose, St. Anne, St. Thomas More, St. Monica, St. Joseph, St. Mary, and St. Catherine. We will also be doing grounds work for the Sisters of St. Joseph at their Nazareth location.

Other organizations we will be serving with both at Hackett and on location include: Caring Network, Kalamazoo Gospel Mission, Portage Community Outreach Center, Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Kalamazoo Soccer Complex, Bronson Hospital, Holy Family Health Care, Loaves and Fishes, and the Deacon’s Conference.

Much of the work will be outdoors and all projects will go forth rain or shine! Right now rain is projected for Friday morning, but prayer can change that!

Students will receive their volunteer assignments by the end of the school day on Wednesday April 25th. They will also receive instructions on what to wear and any other items they may need to bring for their specific project.

We are excited to head out into the community this week and make a difference. St. Mother Theresa of Calcutta once said, “A life not lived for others is not a life.” I think the same thing applies to Hackett. We are not here only for ourselves, our students, and our families. We are here to truly make a difference in our community. We are called to go be Christ to others and to proclaim the Good News of God’s love for each of us. Work-A-Thon is our opportunity to go out into the community, to make a difference, and be living witnesses of the Gospel.

Thank you to all who have volunteered to help with this day. If you would still like to volunteer or have any questions feel free to contact Kathy Williams at kwilliams@hackettcp.org.

Members hosted a concert in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. and worked with the Kalamazoo County Substance Abuse Task Force on an alcohol abuse awareness campaign. Next up is an Earth Day event. Youth may volunteer at the local community center, host a movie in the park, collaborate with outside organizations, learn more about local government, etc. Every spring the Portage Mayor and City Council make appointments to the YAC. At this time, they are recruiting new members to replace those that are graduating. The group is limited to 30 members but City Council has never turned anyone away. We often get students from Portage Northern HS and Portage Central HS but they are looking for representation from other schools. Students may register on the YAC website.

For the Week of October 9

Thank you to all parents who met with our teachers during conferences last week.  We appreciate your support and enjoy working with you to educate and form your student(s).

As you may have heard (or saw during conferences), we had a little bit of a sewer backup in our locker rooms and trainer's room last Wednesday.  The contaminant was cleaned up within a couple of hours.  The floors and affected areas were then disinfected, scrubbed down, and sanitized.  The area most affected by the contaminant was the training room.  The flooring and paneling along the walls, along with some equipment, will need to be replaced.  Thankfully, with school not in session last Thursday or Friday, this was able to be taken care of immediately and without affecting any classes or practices.

End of 1st Marking Period
